None But a Harper

None But a Harper
Lyrics by Peter S. Beagle, music by Gunn-McKee
Performed by The Brobdingnagian Bards on Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales

"I am no king, and I am no lord,
And I am no soldier at arms," said he.
"I am none but a harper, and a very poor harper
That has come hither to wed with thee."

"If you were a lord, you should be my lord
And the same if you were a thief," said she.
"And if you were a harper, you should be my harper.
For it makes no matter to me, to me,
For it makes no matter to me."

"But what if it prove that I am no harper?
That I lied for your love most monstrously?"
"Why then I'll teach you to play and sing,
For I dearly love a good harp," said she.

Background from Marc Gunn: A long time ago, Andrew read The Last Unicorn, then he saw the movie. Well, he was quite disconcerted to find that the lyrics from the last page of the book were not found in the movie. So when we got together, this was one of the first songs we arranged.

If there is a song you've heard on the podcast that you would like to see included, simply send me an email at lyrics@renaissancefestivalmusic.com and I'll do my best to include them here.
